Canners we claim to have tested: 0
Everyone in this category tells you they tested twenty canners. We have not tested any, and we say so.
What we did instead: read the manufacturers’ published manuals and spec sheets, compiled the specifications into comparison tables that do not otherwise exist, checked every pick against the National Center for Home Food Preservation’s published canner rules, and applied NCHFP’s element-size rule to every canner whose base diameter its manufacturer publishes.
That is verifiable work. You can follow every link on this site to the source and check whether we read it correctly, which is more than you can do with a claimed twenty years or a test kitchen you cannot visit.
1. The screening standard
Before any judgment about which canner is nicer, each one is checked against what the NCHFP publishes as a canner requirement. These are quoted, not paraphrased:
- UL approval. “Use only canners that have the Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL) approval to ensure their safety.”
- Capacity. Canners are “designed to hold seven quart jars or eight to nine pints”, and “pressure saucepans with smaller volume capacities are not recommended for use in canning.”
- Water cover. A boiling-water canner “must be deep enough so that at least 1 inch of briskly boiling water will be over the tops of jars during processing.”
- Element size. “To ensure uniform processing of all jars with an electric range, the canner should be no more than 4 inches wider in diameter than the element on which it is heated.”
A product that fails any of these does not get recommended. Some of them appear on the site anyway, in the “skip this” position, so you can recognize the category rather than wonder why it is missing — there are 4 of those among the 27 products in our registry.
2. The stove-fit arithmetic, shown
The element rule above is the single most useful number in this category and almost nobody applies it for you. Your maximum canner base diameter is your element diameter plus four inches. A household electric element is commonly six to nine inches, which caps the canner at ten to thirteen inches — and that eliminates several of the most-recommended canners in the category before a single feature is compared.
We publish that arithmetic on will it fit your stove, using each manufacturer’s own published base diameter. Where a manufacturer does not publish one — Presto and Granite Ware, between them the two most-recommended brands for beginners, do not — we say so and tell you to measure, rather than inventing a number.
3. Where the specifications come from
Every capacity, diameter, material, jar count and pressure rating on this site is taken from the manufacturer’s own published page or spec sheet, and each product carries a link to the exact source we read. Nothing is recalled from memory and nothing is copied from another publisher’s roundup.
Where a manufacturer does not publish a figure, the specification row says so. A blank in one of our tables is a genuine blank, not a gap we filled in.
4. The price policy
Prices come from a live data layer and are rendered with the date they were verified. Nothing else on this site can produce a price — there is no second path by which a number could reach a page.
- A live price older than 48 hours disappears rather than going stale. The button falls back to “Check price on Amazon.”
- Where there is no live price, the button says “Check price on Amazon” and takes you to the current price. We never print a remembered number.
- Right now, that is every product on the site. Amazon grants the pricing API only after an Associates account makes its qualifying sales, and this brand is new. The price display and its verification timestamp are already built, and the numbers appear the moment the feed is authorized — with no change to a word of the content.
5. What we do not do
- We do not claim to have tested anything. No test kitchen, no owned units, no “in our testing”.
- We do not invent credentials. No certifications, no expert panel, no “medically reviewed”, no years served.
- We publish no reviews, ratings or review counts, and we emit no review markup for search engines. We have no first-party ratings, so asserting any would be a fabrication.
- We do not accept free products or sponsored placements.
- We do not give safety advice of our own. Every processing time and safety claim traces to the NCHFP, the USDA Complete Guide to Home Canning, or a named university extension service, with the link next to the claim.
6. Our conflict, and the check on it
We earn a commission when you buy through a link here. That is how the site is funded and we are not going to pretend it creates no incentive.
The check on it is this: every roundup names something we would not buy, and says why. If a page cannot tell you what to avoid, it is not advice, it is a catalog. Hold us to that — a roundup here without a skip is a page that failed our own standard. See our affiliate disclosure.
7. Who writes this

8. When we change our minds
Picks are reviewed quarterly for discontinued products and dead links, and safety content every six months against current NCHFP guidance. Where a change is material we date it on the page rather than editing quietly.
